Car carrier sent back to China after stink bugs found on board
A car carrier understood to be carrying a large number of Tesla Model Y vehicles for Australian buyers has been sent back to China after stink bugs were found on board. The Glovis Caravel had been circling off Brisbane for weeks while the crew fumigated the ship.
DAFF confirmed that live yellow spotted stink bugs were found on the vessel, along with other biosecurity risks. The ship left Australian territory to manage the risk. Tesla told affected customers the vessel was required to return to Shanghai for further processing before re-entering an Australian port.
Vehicles and machinery are among the highest risk pathways for hitchhiker pests such as brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB). Every rejected ship means long delays for buyers and real costs for importers. Fast, effective treatment of cargo before it reaches the wharf is the best way to avoid them.
