DAFF finalises khapra beetle pest risk analysis for plant products
DAFF released the final report for Part 1 of its pest risk analysis (PRA) for khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium) on 27 August 2026. Part 1 covers plant product pathways.
Khapra beetle is not present in Australia. DAFF ranks it as the number one plant priority pest for grains and number two on the National Priority Plant Pests list. It is a serious pest of stored grain, rice, pulses and nuts, and it can travel as a hitchhiker in sea containers.
The final report confirms that all seven existing emergency measures should remain in place. It also recommends a new measure for plant products imported for research purposes. Other recommendations include stronger phytosanitary certification for treated consignments and a requirement that offshore treatment providers are registered under AFAS or AusTreat. The current emergency measures stay in place until updated import conditions are published on BICON.
Part 2 of the PRA will cover the sea container pathway. DAFF expects to release the draft for public consultation in early 2027. Effective container treatment is central to keeping khapra beetle out of Australia, which is why UBL continues to develop Fume8 for this market.
